About this painting

This portrait was made for philanthropists Laura Blanco and Bob Shainheit, after a nice photo section at their home, a beautiful home steeped in the couple's spirit.

Laura and Bob, well known in the New York art scene for supporting cultural institutions and fostering the development of the arts. They have supported projects by many emigrated artists with a special interest in the new exiled generation of Cuban artists established in different towns on the banks of the Hudson in New Jersey.

I had special pleasure in making this portrait, I thank these special friends, the great luck to meet them.

About the technical issues of these portraits.

These pieces are made in white oil on a white background.

One of the characteristics that make this way of making portraits something at least special is that it embraces the tradition of the genre as a transit towards the fragmentation of the image, allowing the coexistence between two states of it. When the canvas is seen from the front, the image is subtly constructed with the infliction of obliquely directed light. If we are standing at an oblique angle to the painting, the image is fragmented and the organized figure of a represented body is lost. This happens because the background is textured in the form of directional line patterns. We then contemplate an abstract image constructed in soft tones of luminous whites and low media grays. A gap between a neorealist painting and a minimal- abstract visuality

Este retrato fue realizado para los filantropos Laura Blanco y Bob Shainheit, después de una agradable sección de fotos en su casa, una hermosa casa impregnada del espiritú de la pareja.

Laura y Bob, muy conocidos en el ambiente del arte newyorkino por apoyar instituciones culturales y fomentar el desarrollo de las artes. Han respaldado proyectos de muchos artístas emigrados con especial interés en la nueva generación exiliada de artístas cubanos establecidos en distintos pueblos a las orillas del Hudson en New Jersey.

Tuve especial placer en realizar éste retrato, agradezco a estos amigos especiales, la gran suerte de conocerles.

Acerca de las cuestiones tecnicas de estos retratos.

Estas piezas son realizadas en óleo blanco sobre fondo blanco.

Una de las características que convierten esta manera de hacer retratos en algo cuando menos especial, es que abraza la tradición del género como un transito hacia la fragmentación de la imagen, permiten la convivencia entre dos estados de la misma. Cuando se ve de frente el lienzo se construye sutilmente la imagen con el influjo de la luz dirigida en forma oblicua. Si estamos parados en un ángulo oblicuo respecto al cuadro, la imagen se fragmenta y se pierde la figura organizada del cuerpo representado. Esto sucede debido a que el fondo es texturado en forma de patrones de líneas direccionales. Contemplamos entonces una imagen abstracta construida en tonos suaves de blancos luminosos y grises medios. Un resquicio entre una pintura de corte neorealista y una visualidad minimal- abstracta.

About this painting

Portrait made to José Valdés-Fauli and Shed Boren, philanthropists based in Miami. With an immense love for the arts, they have supported different generations of Latin American artists, with a special interest in Cuban Art. They have an enviable modest collection that shows masters of Cuban art from the 60s to 70s to more contemporary artists including the youngest generation of Cuban artists, among other Latin American artists. I have special admiration for José and Shed, a couple who continue to tirelessly support the art of our day.

Retrato realizado a José Valdés-Fauli y Shed Boren, filantropos radicados en Miami. Con un inmenso amor a las artes, han apoyado a distintas generaciones de artístas latinoamericanos, teniendo especial interés el arte cubano. Poseen una modesta colección envidiable que muestra desde maestros del arte cubano de los años 60- 70 hasta artistas más contemporáneos incluyendo a la más jóven generación de artistas cubanos, entre otros artístas latinoaméricanos. Tengo especial admiración por José y Shed, una pareja que sigue apoyando incansablemente el arte de nuestros días.
